Is 7 a lucky number for the kids waiting on your help?

Yes, it is me again

If you have been keeping track, I have been promoting a fundraiser for the Children’s Miracle Network.  I have begged, pleaded and in some cases cajoled folks to help out with this cause. The response has been heart warming.  Lots of you have said you would support the cause.  I had a plan that folks would sponsor me at ten cents a hole. I also added that the cost would go up if I parred the hole or did better than pay.

I will be honest, my goal was 72 holes.  I figured I could get through 54.  I never dreamed I could go on and on and on like the energizer bunny.  But then I did not realize the energy I could draw from all of you and the members at the club and the folks that came by during the day to cheer me on.

I had no clue the power you can find with the support of your best friend.

We showed up at sunrise (530 came very early after preparing until 1 am the night before).  Lourdes loaded the golf cart with sunscreen, bug repellent, gator ade, sodas, water, extra balls and tees.  The staff greeted us warmly and sent us on our way.

I began playing at around 7 in the morning and kept going through the day until seven at night.  I did manage 54 holes and I kept going.  I got to 90 holes and Lourdes said “let’s try for 100”.  We passed 100 and finished our sixth round with 108 holes completed.  By that time a small group of friends had shown up.  We headed out for the seventh time and as our 12th hour on the course came to a close, I managed to finish 18 more to total 126 holes in one day.

So, if you were one of those that chimed in and said you would support the effort on a per hole basis…well, at ten cents a hole, your pledge is $12.60.  The score card indicates that out of 126 holes I managed 70 pars, 13 birdies and one eagle.  If you want to go the full route, that adds $3.50 for the pars and $3.50 for the birdie or better holes. That would bring the total to $19.60.

If it is all too confusing, please take a minute and send what you can…$5.00 or $10.00 helps a lot. Make checks or money orders payable to: Children’s Miracle Network and send them to Tudela MacArthur, ReMax Realty Centre, 3300  Olney-Sandy Spring Road, Olney, MD 20832. In the comment section write: golf marathon.

I suppose, at the end of completing seven rounds of golf, my only question is…Is 7 a lucky number for the kids waiting on your help?

Thank’s for your support!

I have to add a special thank you to the platinum sponsors and individual hole sponsors.  And I will be forever grateful to the management and staff at Gunpowder Golf Club. Their support made this event possible.  With all of that behind me…playing all day was a walk in the park.

104 degrees … beats laying in air conditioned Children’s Hospital bed

Wednesday was conditioning day as I wind up my preparation for the Children’s Miracle Network Golf marathon.  Lourdes and I went out to the course to strategize (not a real word but expresses our intent), go over cart management and see how long we could stand the 104 degree heat.  I had already spent about 5 hours on the course in the morning.

It was hot.  The ground shimmered with reflected heat.  A haze of an indescribable color hung just above the tree line.  The earth dry and rock solid sporting a withering coating of grass lay before us.  Yes, it was hot and nasty.  The one thought that we shared “How many children are laying in hospitals right now that would love to run and play under the July sun.  These little ones are hidden from the public.  The care givers see them every day. Their parents sit by their bedside day and night.  One of the collective dreams shared…they would love to be treating a sunburn or a scraped knee.  They silently sit and wait for a miracle.

The wonderful management team and golfers at The Gunpowder Golf Course understand the need.  They are supporting the Children’s Miracle Network Golf Marathon.  Members are buying balloons daily.  They get it.  These wonderful men and women realize a dollar here or there will add up. You won’t see their faces on the evening news. They live next door and down the street.  They are the stuff that makes this country great.

So, off we went, testing the limits of our heat wave.  We traveled down hills and back up again.  We passed creeks and ponds.  We fought off mosquitoes and horse flies.  Calloused hands found new blisters and sweat glands went into overdrive.  We passed friends that were playing and were encouraged by their support.  Minutes turned into one hour then two and then we called it a day.   The temperature was hovering above 100 and we had appointments with a few more sponsors.  To date we have over fifty supporters on a per hole basis and we have been able to sign up 9 tee/hole sponsors.  The hole/ tee sponsors that have signed on so far are: ReMax Realty Centre Golf Tournament, Universal Printing , Telligent Masonry Construction , Dwight Mueller DDS (Wintergreen Family Dental), Potomac Disposal , Levi Brandriss (Ameriprise Financial), Capital Settlements, Tudela-MacArthur and  CJ Ferrari’s Restaurant . You can see there is still room for more.  Please remember these firms when you have a need for someone in their field. Their support speaks volumes about their character.

I can’t change the world.  I understand that the newspapers are full of just horrible stories.  Yes, the oil spill is down right frightening.  Of course, the war over seas is a dilemma.  There is no doubt that the economy is still seeking recovery.  All these things will sort themselves out over time.  Some of the children don’t have that sort of time. They are waiting on a miracle.  No one person can make that happen.  I believe that if we join together, we can make it happen.  That is why 104 degrees was not much to suffer.  Lourdes and I could go home at sunset.

It’s your call…Will you step up to the plate?

So, we are in the final stages of gathering support for the Children’s Miracle Network Golf Marathon.  It still is not to late for you to step up to the plate and support this effort. It is so easy to say “the children are our future”.  It is very comfortable in our home if our children are not facing physical and emotional challenges.  Children like Max, are not fictitious.

Max is just one of thousands. His parents are just two of thousands. His miracle does not have to stand alone. It can be repeated at Children’s hospitals across the country.  Sometimes, folks just need a little help.

If you have a minute or two to spare, please read about the event and consider offering your support.  If you think about it….. a small donation made can become part of the synergistic effect of all the others that took the time.

Golf Marathon

Sponsored by

Gunpowder Golf Club

July 13th, 2010

You can support the Marathon. Balloons will be available at the course. Donate as little as you can but as much as you would like and have your name printed on a balloon that will be displayed in the clubhouse (These are similar to the balloons you have seen in 7-11).

The Children’s Miracle Network golfer (John MacArthur aka JMac) will begin playing the course at sunrise and continue playing all day long.  If you would like to support the event , you can do so in one of several methods.

Platinum Level — single donation from $25 to $100

The Platinum Level sponsors are concerned only with how and not how many.  These individuals are aware of the challenges faced by the Children’s Miracle Network and wish to donate regardless of how many holes are completed.

Individual Tee (Hole) Sponsors — $10 per sponsored hole passed during the marathon.

The Individual Hole Sponsorships are limited to 18 slots.  Once 18 sponsors have signed up, their hole number will be drawn randomly.  Each time the golfer completes the hole that is sponsored, the sponsor will donate $10 to the Children’s Miracle Network. There will be a sign noting the sponsorship on the appropriate hole. (The estimated cost of this level is $30-$40. It will cap at $50 and $50 is possibly beyond physical possibility)

Gold Level — .10 cents per hole (increased by .05 if hole is pared, increased by .15 if better than par)

The Gold Level sponsors are the backbone of any charity event.  They recognize that their contribution may $5 or $10 dollars and that their participation will grow through the synergy of all the participants.  (If the golfer manages to finish 54 holes, making par on 25% and better than par on 10%, the total contribution will be $6.85)

All checks should be made payable to: Children’s Miracle Network. Mail contributions to: Children’s Miracle Network c/o ReMax Realty Centre, 3300 Olney-Sandy Spring Road, Olney, MD 20832. Please note in the for area: Golf Marathon.
